Hubballi: A case of abetment to suicide has been registered against the police at the Old Hubballi police station on Friday. The accused in this case include ASI Jayashri Chalwadi and Inspector UH Satenahalli, both attached to the Keshwapur police station. Additionally, six others have been mentioned as accused in this case.

What is this case?

The background of the case involves alleged suicide of Nikhil Kundagol, a 27-year-old resident of Kotilinga Nagar. Allegedly, Nikhil had been facing marital issues with his wife, Preeti. Preeti had filed a formal complaint with the Keshwapur police on Thursday claiming that her husband had been subjecting her to torture. In response, the police initiated proceedings to address the situation by summoning both parties on Thursday. But Nikhil took his own life on the following Friday.

Family members of Nikhil have raised serious allegations against Inspector and ASI Jayashri, claiming that they pressured Nikhil to provide Rs 2 lakh, gold ornaments, and utensils, which were given by Preeti’s family during their marriage. This pressure and fear led Nikhil to take this extreme, said the complaint.

Consequently, a case has been registered against the two police officers and five members of Preeti’s family, including Preeti herself, along with an unknown individual. The charges include IPC section 306, which pertains to abetment to suicide, and IPC section 149, which concerns every member of an unlawful assembly being guilty of an offense committed in the prosecution of a common object.
